Domestic workers are among the most invisible and unprotected groups in India's informal economy. They work inside homes across Indian cities, often in poorly ventilated spaces with little control over their working hours or conditions. Unlike outdoor workers, their heat exposure happens behind closed doors, which makes it even less visible to researchers, policymakers and the public.
HeatWatch has begun engaging with domestic workers in Bengaluru, in partnership with the Domestic Workers Union, to understand how rising temperatures affect their health, income and daily lives. This is an ongoing area of work and part of HeatWatch's broader effort to document the impact of extreme heat on workers with the least access to protection and support.
